Voted the greatest living White Sox player in a 1969 fan poll Luke Appling held down the team?s shortstop position for nearly twenty years. In that time he established ML shortstop records for games played and double plays and AL records for putouts and assists. In his greatest year 1936 Appling led the AL with a .388 average. It was the first batting title won by a White Sox player. He also had a club-record 27-game hitting streak and a seven-for-seven performance over three games. In 1943 at age 35 he won his second batting title. He hit .300 15 times. His legacy among the greatest players in White Sox history was solidified upon his election to the Hall of Fame in 1964. Offered here for the first time publicly is one of the few Appling game jerseys known to exist. The white flannel White Sox home jersey dates from 1937 as noted in chain stitching in the back tail. Also appearing in chain stitch is "Appling" in the collar beneath the Spalding manufacturer's tag. All tagging and applied lettering and numbers including the "Sox" logo on front and Appling's number "4" on reverse are original and unaltered. Another player's name is written in the collar indicating that it was worn by someone else after its service to Appling. Another indication of this is the outline of a patch since removed and unrelated to use by Appling that appears on the left sleeve. The jersey demonstrates excellent display quality in spite of subtle condition flaws such as a tear on the left sleeve a few age spots a hole in the right armpit and 4 replaced buttons. All told this is a fantastic discovery that would be a key addition to any Hall of Fame jersey collection. LOA from MEARS.
