Addendum: Team year and starting bid adjusted from catalog.
The 1934 New York Yankees finished in 2nd place in the American League with a 93-61 record. It would be Babe Ruth's last year in pinstripes as the Sultan of Swat played his farewell '35 season with the Boston Braves. While the team may not have raised a banner, it was a very memorable campaign for Lou Gehrig, who captured the Triple Crown with a .363 BA, 49 HR and 166 RBI. Somehow, he finished 5th in the MVP voting. Go figure.
Presented here is an Official American League (president's name not legible) baseball signed by 23 members of the '34 Bronx Bombers squad.
With a bold 7-8/10 Babe Ruth on the sweet spot and an equally strong Lou Gehrig over the worn off OAL stamp, this ball is truly amazing. Uniformly toned/soiled from aging and wear, it has a moderate coating of shellac that has done a marvelous preservation job with the black penned autographs, which as a whole rate in the 6-9 range. The boldest 9/10 signatures are Tony Lazzeri (HOF), Johnny Murphy and George Selkirk. Other notables include Lefty Gomez (HOF), Joe Sewell (HOF), Ben Chapman, Frank Crosetti, Hoag, Newkirk, Broaca, Taylor, Saltzgaver, MacFayden, DeShong, Byrd, Heffner, Jorgens, Allen and Van Atta. Also
present are clubhouse autographs for Red Ruffing and Red Rolfe.
