Offered here is an extremely high-end example of the scarcer of the two Lou Gehrig cards in the 1933 Goudey series. Fantastic eye appeal is primarily attributed to rich coloration, superb registration and razor sharp corners. Gehrig’s at-bat image (courtesy of Charles Conlon) in card #92 is portrayed against a flawless, blemish-free blue background. The 1933 Goudey issue is known historically as the first bubble gum baseball card set. The cards each measure 2-3/8” by 2-7/8" and the prestigious issue advertised 240 in the set, but fell short by one as Nap Lajoie’s #106 was not issued in 1933. Some believe this was done purposely to spur sales. In 1934, the #106 was sent for free to anyone who wanted it. Gehrig’s colorized portrayal depicts him drawn back, ready to unleash his powerful swing. This card is nearly impossible to find in such high grade, earning a Mint 9 designation from SGC -- one of just three at that elite level. None are graded higher than this example in the SGC pop report.
