The USC Trojans football team won a national title in 1932 after steamrolling their opponent, the University of Pittsburgh Panthers, 35-0, in the Rose Bowl played in January 2, 1933. The undefeated Trojans entered the game 9-0, while the Pitt Panthers owned an 8-0-2 mark. Despite their records, the game was a blowout as USC – coached by Howard Jones – continued to pile on to their opponent by scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns. The game’s MVP was Trojan quarterback Homer Griffith. This lot includes a team-signed, USC-emblazoned Spalding football from that campaign. Dozens of autographs scrawled in black ink can be seen with some portion of the deflated football showing sun damage and thus some signatures are severely faded. Overall the signatures range in legibility and clarity from a 2 rating up to 8/10. Top signatures include John Seixas, Gene Ridings, Howard Tipton, Ernie Smith, Al Reboin, Bob Getz and Julius Bescos. A notable signature that appears on one of the ball’s panels belongs to College Football Hall of Famer Aubrey Devine. A standout multi-purpose back at the University of Iowa, Devine served as an assistant coach at USC from 1925-1936 under Howard Jones.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the Newport Sports Museum.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
