Babe Ruth’s marriage to Claire Hodgson in 1929 likely lengthened the great slugger’s career by several years. A strong willed and worldly woman, Claire was able to slow down some of Ruth’s self-destructive habits such as excessive liquor consumption and late nights on the town during the season. This enabled the Babe to concentrate on his game and enjoy a longer career, hitting the last 244 home runs of his career during their marriage. This Type 1 photo depicts the Babe during 1931 spring training teaching Claire how to swing his “war club.” This Type 1 photo has some edge wear. And rounded corners. There is an ink smudge on Ruth’s pant leg and some rippling on the right side of the image. The back has the original Associated Press caption slug and “Mar 17 1931” date stamp. Several production markings and catalog stamps are present. The photo has been encapsulated and graded Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
