There is no more recognizable name in all of baseball history than the legendary George Herman “Babe” Ruth. The “Sultan of Swat,” as he was nicknamed, clubbed a total of 714 home runs during his playing days with the Boston Red Sox (1914 to ‘19) and New York Yankees (1920 to ’34) with the majority of his round-trippers (665) coming as a member of the Bronx Bombers.

This lot features an official National League (Heydler) baseball that Ruth signed in 1931 during one of his off-season barnstorming tour games. The heavily toned Spalding baseball – sporting red and black stitches – includes Ruth’s signature perfectly placed in black fountain pen across the sweet spot. This particular brand of Spalding baseball was manufactured from the period 1919 to 1924. Given its age, the ball’s current state of preservation is unremarkable, remaining toned throughout with evidence of handling. Though the autograph remains legible, it too looks its age: 86 years. There is evidence of unknown writing on the south panel that is indecipherable.
