In 1929 the United States Golf Association hosted its Open Championship
for the first time at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY, just outside the Big Apple. A lucky patron used this very ticket to witness the legendary Bobby Jones en route to his third U.S. Open title. After blowing a back-nine lead and finishing with a final round 79, Jones punished Al Espinosa by 23 strokes in an almost comical 36-hole playoff. It was retribution from the previous year's Open when Jones lost in a playoff. Jones would win the next year as well to cap off his four U.S. Open major championships (all as an amateur) and set the stage for his important post-playing career as the game's most indelible ambassador.
This
blue circular (3-inch) "Gallery" ticket to the second round on Friday, June 28,
is, to
our knowledge, one of only two examples from any round at the
'29 Open. Still retaining its original string attachment, it comes in overall VG condition with some visible staining on the front and a bit of paper loss on the back. The only other 1929 US. Open ticket we could find sold for $1,988 five years ago. Super rare ticket crowing Bobby Jones as champion!
