Snapped before a game at Philadelphia’s Shibe Park in 1928, this Type 1 photo depicts the four best left-handed hitters in the game. The elders of the group are Dead Ball icons Tris Speaker and Ty Cobb, both spending the final year of their Hall of Fame careers with the Athletics. Speaker would retire with a .345 average with 3,514 hits while Cobb would close out his career with .366 and a record 4,189 hits. The two comparably youngsters in the photo are Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, both in their prime and in the process of replacing Speaker and Cobb as the game’s most prominent batsmen. Gehrig would hit .374 and lead the league in doubles while Ruth would blast 54 home runs, the third of six consecutive seasons he’d lead the league in that category. The photo has been cropped from its original size and the image runs to the edge. There is toning from age present as well as some chipping along the edges. There is a piece missing from the top right corner and some creasing is visible. The back features some faded stampings and displays some toning from age. This piece has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
