The 1927 Yankees are perhaps the most famous sports team of all-time. Boasting Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, and Earle Combs, the ’27 Yankees pounded their way to the second of three consecutive pennants and the first of two consecutive World Championships. While Ruth and company are given the lion’s share of credit for the team’s success, the pitching staff was also first rate that season. The starting rotation of Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock and Urban Shocker won 59 games between them, and rookie Wilcy Moore was the big surprise of the year, winning 19 games as a spot starter and reliever.

This Underwood & Underwood original Type I photograph shows the pitching staff of this immortal ballclub. Standing before the stands in Yankee Stadium, the photo shows Bob Shawkey (2 wins), Joe Giard (0 wins), Myles Thomas (7 wins), Urban Shocker (18 wins), Waite Hoyt (22 wins), Herb Pennock (19 wins), Wilcy Moore (19 wins), Don Miller, Dutch Ruether (13 wins), George Pipgras (10 wins). The 8x10 photo displays light toning from age. The edges show some dings and the bottom left and right borders have been clipped. There is an area of staining along the bottom border, but this does not encroach upon the image area. The back has the Underwood & Underwood stamping along with the original caption slug which identifies the players. Several pencil notations are also present. A wonderful original Type I photo of the crew that pitched the Yankees to the 1927 World Championship. The photo has been authenticated and encapsulated Type I by PSA/DNA.
