John McGraw’s three decades of managing the New York Giants coincided with the career of baseball’s greatest photographer, Charles Conlon. The New York-based photographer chronicled the game’s players, from the biggest stars to those called up for a brief cup of coffee in The Show. At some point during the 1927 season, Conlon lugged his camera to the Polo Grounds to shoot the Giants in their home environment. While the majority of Conlon’s photos are carefully posed, this example depicts the team’s perennial manager as he hit some pregame fungoes to his players. The Type 1 photo has a nice warm tone from age and some edge wear present. The reverse has a July 16, 1927 date stamp along with The Ring, Inc magazine stamp and “Manager McGraw Giants Batting to infielders” and other notations handwritten in pencil. A great action shot of one of baseball’s most successful managers taken by the game’s most respected photographer. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
