This series of strip cards produced by the Universal Toy and Novelty, Co. in the mid to late 1920’s is among is among the hobby’s more mysterious issues.  The exact date of production isn’t known, but the set is speculated to be a late 1920s issue due to the known subjects.  It isn’t known how many cards there are in the entire set. To date, eight baseball players are known, but other sports/non-sports personalities are known to exist, as well. Based on the playing card deck design, most speculate that 52 cards were issued in the set.

Cards appear to have been printed in sheets. The card of Doug McWeeny, an example of which is offered here, is always seen miscut and shows the edges of other cards to his right and beneath him. In addition to McWeeny, this lot includes what must be considered the key subjects in the series in Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, followed closely by fellow Yankee HOFer Waite Hoyt. This group of four cards constitutes half the know baseball players in the series. The cards measures approximately 1-5/8" by 2-1/2" and grade as follows; Babe Ruth VG-EX, Lou Gehrig GD (crease), Waite Hoyt EX and Doug McWeeny EX. A rare opportunity for type collectors and player collectors alike. Comes from the same collection as the other top Ruth & Gehrig cards in this auction and our last as well.
