Lou Gehrig is in his junior year at Columbia in 1924, and is pictured in 3 photos as a member of the baseball team. One is a team photo, a second is a full body pose in uniform. The third is the most dramatic as Gehrig is featured at bat during a game in his classic swing, caption below states... "Gehrig struts his stuff." There is a full crowd in the background and one can only imagine that many scouts were in attendance. Gehrig's talents were well-known even in his collegiate days attesting to this quote from the yearbook, "In spite of the fact that Columbia can point to no imposing string of victories in 1923, it can justly lay claim to the possession of perhaps the brightest individual star in the constellation of college ball teams. This man is Lou Gehrig." And later in the text... "He is now the property of the New York Yankees." There are other glowing pronouncements of Gehrig throughout the baseball text. This copy of the 35th edition of "The Colombian" is in VG condition with a slightly loosened spine, although all pages are intact and clean. Original owner’s small handwritten personal identification info. appears on inside front cover. A very rare piece of Gehrig memorabilia from his early days of baseball.
