Offered here is an oversized (29” wide by 27” high) track and field trophy from 1925 that celebrates the U.S.S. Pennsylvania’s victory that year in the U.S. Pacific Fleet competition. The trophy, which weighs an astounding 55 pounds, features a sculpted bronze sprinter, crouched down, seemingly ready to start a race, perched atop a wooden base that measures 21” wide by 14” deep. Around the entire outside of the wooden base is a metal band that is engraved with the names of previous Pacific Fleet winners including the U.S.S. California (1922) and the U.S.S. Mississippi (1923). The front of the wooden base boasts an engraved metal plaque that reads as follows: “Navy Department Trophy, Annual Field & Track U.S. Pacific Fleet, Last Won by U.S.S. Pennsylvania 1924-1925.”
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
