This lot features an outstanding example of a blonde Heinie Groh Louisville Slugger "bottle" bat dating from the 1921-1931 manufacturing period. The H&B 125 signature model bat (pre-dating model numbers) measures 33 inches, weighs 40.5 ounces and displays heavy use including ball marks and cleat marks. A noticeable crack along the handle seems to have been repaired for the most part. Groh was a member of Cincinnati in 1921 and then spent the next five season with the Giants, where he helped lead the club to three pennants and one World Championship. He finished his Major League career with the N.L. pennant-winning Pirates in 1927 but continued playing in the minor leagues through 1932. Groh began his career in 1912 and was also a member of the World Champion 1919 Cincinnati Reds. That World Series was well remembered in baseball history because that was the year of the "Black Sox" scandal. He finished his career with a .292 average and led the National League in fielding percentage at his position on five separate occasions. Groh was particularly known for his use of his "bottle" bat and single-handedly made this bat style famous. Aesthetically appealing, this treasure is sure to make for a great conversation piece.
