The lone season George Daniel "Buck" Weaver suited up for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League just so happened to be the first year of this rare and highly popular West Coast candy issue. The 1911 Zee-Nut E136 set featured striking sepia toned images on taller, thinner card stock allowing for a full-body pose from each player -- in this case, a future big-leaguer whose reputation as a tremendous ballplayer would soon be overshadowed by his complicity in the notorious Black Sox Scandal. Weaver debuted with the ChiSox in 1912 and developed into a stalwart defender on the left side of the infield, first at shortstop and later at the hot corner for the 1917 World Champions. His confident pose -- hands at hips -- and smug expression are eerily telling given that, despite his involvement in baseball's biggest black eye, Weaver has received wide-scale exoneration in the hobby. In fact, his collectability from both a card and autograph standpoint, is largely equatable, if not superior, to the many of the game's earliest Hall of Famers and stars.

This PSA VG 3 example has been given an "MK" qualifier due to a pencil mark on the blank back. The original collector had apparently hand-numbered his cards. We could have tried erasing it but chose to leave the card in its original state. For a nearly 110-year-old card, it remains in terrific shape. Centering is excellent, corners are softly and evenly rounded, and the warm sepia colors remain clean, crisp and fluid. The top left corner on the back has a diagonal wrinkle. One of two 1911 Zee-Nut Buck Weaver true rookie cards from the Yahtzee Box Find; a PSA GD 2 (MK) is part of the near-complete set in Lot 20. With just 13 in the PSA Pop Report (4 with qualifiers), the recent discovery comprises 15%. Only five are graded higher and only one of those is above EX 5.
