Christy Mathewson was as charismatic and popular as any player in the early 1900’s. In a time when ballplayers were known as hard living, hard drinking rogues, there was “Matty”. The college-educated star was the idol of millions, the role model every parent wanted their children to emulate. His articulate dignified persona contrasted a fierce competitiveness on the mound that made him arguably the most dominant pitcher of his time. One of only seven examples grading NM-MT 8, with only one higher, the offered example of Matty's signature card appears to be virtually flawless. The large portrait image of the famously handsome baseball hero is perfectly framed by distinctive gold borders that bear no faults. The notoriously fragile corners show no signs of wear or handling. Matty’s T205 gold-bordered issue is arguably the most sought-after standard issue card bearing his likeness, and certainly among the most difficult to acquire in high-grade. The breathtaking print quality of this showpiece, accentuated by the immaculate, chip free borders and pinpoint corners beg for consideration of a higher technical grade. The Piedmont brand is advertised on the reverse. One would be hard pressed to find another T205 Mathewson with more eye appeal than this extraordinary beauty.
