Christy Mathewson's book, "Won in the Ninth," published in 1910 present an entertaining story-line that chronicles the activities of a college baseball team, and is populated by characters with names like Hans Hagner, Johnny Everson, Joe Brinker, Ty Robb, and manager Hughie Jenkins. Mathewson’s book also demonstrates the proper grips for throwing his famous "Fade-Away" as well as "Other Deceptive Curves." The volume was dedicated by Mathewson to the memory of Henry Chadwick. This work of fiction was heralded as the first in a series of stories for boys by the most popular player in baseball.

Presented here is an astonishingly well preserved advertising poster touting the Mathewson novel. The 12” x15” display promotes "A live story with live characters written by the man who knows more than any other about the men who are playing the game today." Additional pitches proclaim "Buy it for your boy, But read it yourself." "Matty's Line-Up" is featured at the bottom including the less than thinly disguised names used for the players. The graphics are highlighted by a vivid full body image of Mathewson which, along with the text, is set off brilliantly by the bright orange background color. The piece shows some light touch-up around one corner, barely visible to the naked eye, and present an EX-MT appearance overall. Matted and framed to an overall size of 16 1/2" x 19 1/2."
