A tremendous action shot of the 1907 Jack Johnson-Kid Cutler fight. This photograph wonderfully illustrates the rudimentary ring set up on the field of Lauer's Park in Reading, Pennsylvania, dust rising from the dirt infield with officials looking on in the background. Cutler was a sparring partner for John L. Sullivan and this fight, resulting in his first round knockout by Johnson, would be the last of his career. Johnson would go on to win the heavyweight title in 1908, becoming the first Black boxer to do so. The Type 1 photo has some pieces missing as well as creasing present. The condition does not take anything away from the beauty and dramatic composition of this piece. The back has the Culver Service stamp along with the handwritten caption, “Johnson and Kid Cutler of Chicago.” There is residue from mounting glue as well as paper from where it was originally mounted. The photo has been encapsulated and graded Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
