Joseph Rockwell Swan played end on the Yale’s fabled 1900 team that went undefeated. Upon graduation in 1901, Swan was named coach of the Bulldogs. He promptly led Yale to a 11-0-1 record, outscored their opponents an incredible 286 to 22 and was recognized as the National College Champions. This 10K gold charm was awarded to Coach J.R. Swan at the conclusion of Yale’s 1902 Championship season. The football shaped charm records the scores of Yale’s wins over Princeton and Harvard along with “1902 CHAMPIONS” and “J.R. Swan Field Coach” neatly engraved on its surface. Early Ivy League football pieces are quite scarce, and this beautifully engraved charm named to their coach and dating to a championship season is not only desirable but attractive as well. The charm and engraving are in excellent condition and is a highly attractive piece from Yale’s turn-of-the-century gridiron glory years.
