First baseman Dan McGann was nearing the end of his two decades in baseball when his old teammate on the Baltimore Orioles, John McGraw, brought him to the New York Giants. In New York McGann was an important part of McGraw’s club that won back-to-back pennants in 1904-05 and a World Championship in 1905. This stunning Patek Philippe 14K gold pocket watch belonged to the first baseman, and most significantly, the inscribed date on the inside, “July 15, 1902,” is just two days before his contract was purchased by John McGraw’s Giants.

McGann’s initials are on its outer case and the inside is inscribed “D.L. McGann July 15th 1902.” The face and inside case is marked “Patek Philippe” and the inside with “14K” and “Made for Mermod & Jaccard.” The watch movement is serial numbered “116118.” The watch shows light wear from use and handling and there are two hairline cracks on its face. A much sought-after watch in its own right, this Patek Philippe timepiece is all the more desirable in that it belonged to a member of John McGraw’s first World Championship club.
