Fred Dunlap's slick fielding abilities earned him the nickname "Sure Shot". He was one of the very few early major leaguers to have any success in dealings with clubs and owners. In a period of iron-fisted owner control, Dunlap jumped between leagues and teams for economic gain and used his talents on the field and skills as a contract negotiator to become the highest paid player of his time. However, because of gambling debts, he was apparently living as a pauper in Philadelphia at the time of his death in 1902. Captured here in his prime, Dunlaps's well centered portrait is rendered in rich, colorful tones. Medium corner wear and some scattered spots of toning on the otherwise bright reverse are minimal detractors on this visually impressive mid-grade example.
