This Sporting Times Cigar trade card features the 1888 Champion New York Giants. It is one of approximately twenty to thirty known examples of this card which originate from a single find many years ago. The production of this unique "one-card set" was based on a photograph by renowned nineteenth-century photographer Joseph Hall. The design not surprisingly is reminiscent of Joseph Hall photographic team cabinets of the era. The players identified on the card by name include; Tim Keefe John Ward Mickey Welsh Manager Jim Mutrie Buck Ewing Roger Connor Jim O?Rourke etc. It is possible that this issue was actually intended to be a cigar box label. Financial ledger notes appear on the reverse and a water stain affects one corner. The central image area on the front remains relatively free of any major defects. Measures 7 ½ by 4 ½ inches.
