Anson was the greatest player of the 19th Century, becoming the 1st player to have over 3,000 hits while batting over .300 20 of his 22 major league seasons. There from the beginning in 1876, he played continuously with the Chicago White Stockings until 1897. All this after 5 stand out years in the National Association. As manager from 1879 thru 1897 he led his team to 5 pennants and was the first manager to have a set rotation, use the hit and run, and develop Spring Training as we know it.
