Buck Ewing, the first catcher to be admitted to the Hall of Fame, was also the first player to hit 10 Home Runs in a season. Ewing hit over .300 11 times and finished with a .303 career average for his 18 years in the majors. Ewing was captain of the 1888 and 1889 New York Giant World Championship teams. The 1919 Reach Baseball Guide described Ewing as "In his prime the greatest player of the game.....A player without a weakness of any kind".
