Fitzhugh Lee came from a long line of American fighting men. His grandfather was Revolutionary War hero “Light Horse Harry” Lee, and his father Sydney was captain in the United States Navy. Lee went to West Point and became a cavalry officer, distinguishing himself in several Indian fights before the Civil War. As a Virginian, Lee followed his father into the Confederate armed forces where he served under legendary cavalry General J.E.B. Stuart. Lee was soon given his own cavalry command and he specialized in raiding the Union supply lines when not leading his men in the major battles in the east. This cut page has Lee’s signature complete with a flourish and the added notation, “Virginia.” The paper shows toning from age and some staining, but Fitzhugh Lee’s signature remains crisp and clear. The piece comes with a Beckett LOA.
