The emergence of Walter Johnson’s dominant fastball began when the 19 year-old first unleashed it on the Southern Idaho League in Weiser, Idaho in 1906 and 1907. Perhaps it was when the green teenager pitched 77 scoreless innings that word of the baseball phenom began to spread like wildfire. By June of 1907, when this postcard was made, Johnson would leave the tiny town to begin his Hall of Fame career with the Washington Nationals. This is Walter Johnson’s own “Weiser Wonder” postcard. Such postcards were produced in limited quantities accounting for their scarcity today. On the postcard a fan writes to Johnson that “this picture” is hanging at the towns cigar store. Walter kept this special personal keepsake throughout his life. The postcard is accompanied by a scarce Star Theatre newsprint ad from the 1924 World Series featuring the same image of Johnson. The postcard is in very good condition with slight paper loss on back and note to writing. Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA. LOA from Walter Johnson’s grandson Hank Thomas.
Estimate: $4,000-6,000
