The late Walter Alston, the longtime manager of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1954 to ’76), secured many different accolades and awards during the course of his impressive run as the Dodgers’ skipper. Two of those awards came from the County of Los Angeles as well as the City of Los Angeles. This lot features that pair of wooden plaques awarded to Alston nearing the time of his retirement.
The first wooden plaque, which measure 12.5” wide and 17” high, came from the City of Los Angeles and was awarded to Alston “In Recognition of 20 Years of Dedicated and Outstanding Service as Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers” as is engraved upon the gold plaque residing at the bottom of the plaque. It is dated December 8, 1976, and includes an engraved signature of then-L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley. The second wooden plaque, which measures 14” wide by 17” high, comes from the County of Los Angeles and was awarded to Alston on April 9, 1972, “In Recognition of the Skipper’s Unmatched Professional Talent and Integrity and in Appreciation for His Many Contributions to Baseball and the Los Angeles Community” as is engraved on the golf plaque at the bottom of the award. It includes the names of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors at the time: Warren Dorn, Chairman, along with Peter Schabarum, Kenneth Hahn, Ernest Debs and Burton Chase.
Includes a letter of provenance from the Alston family.
