The late, great Tony Gwynn turned in another remarkable month’s worth of work in May of 1997 after which he was named the recipient of the National League’s prestigious “Player of the Month” award. He opened the month on May 1st by going 3-for-4 against the Mets and closed the campaign with a 2-for-3 effort against the Astros on May 30th, both games resulting in wins for the Padres. Gwynn finished the season with a league-leading .372 batting average. This lot includes the impressive award which consists of specially beveled green crystal in a diamond-like shape that sits atop a green marble base. The official National League logo is embossed in gold on the front of the crystal, while a black-and-gold plaque rests on the award’s marble base that reads: “TONY GWYNN, San Diego Padres, Player of the Month, May 1997.” The overall piece, which measures 10” wide by 10” high, weighs exactly six pounds.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from the Gwynn Family.

A portion of the proceeds generated by the Tony Gwynn Collection will be donated to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation. The TAG Foundation is a non-profit, 5013(c) charity dedicated to creating and supporting programs that enhance opportunities for youth to become healthy, educated, and productive citizens. The TAG Foundation was organized in San Diego in 1995 by Tony’s wife, Alicia. For more information, visit www.tagwynn2.org.
