Offered here is a fascinating piece from Tony Gwynn’s second year in the major leagues, with a date with immortality in Cooperstown still two decades hence. This is a minor-league contract for Gwynn’s rehab assignment to the Las Vegas Stars in the Pacific Coast League, the result of a wrist injury suffered diving for a ball against Pittsburgh during his rookie season and then reinjured during Winter Ball in 1983. He had started the season on the Disabled List and missed the first two months before this May 31 rehab designation.

This is the uniform player’s contract for the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. The six-page standard contract – neatly illustrating the rehab assignment feature with a monthly salary of a princely $1 – differs from major league contracts with its six pages linked vertically rather than horizontally, presenting a yellow document of 8 ½-by-29 inches overall. Gwynn has signed on the sixth and final page along with a Stars executive; a stamped signature from the President of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues is also featured. The document present in essentially Ex-Mt or better condition, with only the obligatory punch holes and minor folding shadows and crinkling from light office use, none of which detracts from the presentation.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from the Gwynn Family.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
