The late, great Tony Gwynn was a member of baseball’s exclusive “3,000 Hit Club” and registered a total of 3,141 hits during his prolific, 20-year career with the San Diego Padres. One of his milestone hits (No. 2600) occurred on May 2, 1997, against right-hander Jeff Juden of the then-Montreal Expos. The game, which was won by Montreal, 5-4, was played at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. Gwynn went 3-for-5 on the day with two runs batted in. This lot includes the official National League (Coleman) baseball that Gwynn hit for his 2,600th career base knock. The ball includes a special callout that reads: “2600th Base Hit against Met. 5-2-97.” It appears the callout inadvertently used the wrong abbreviation for Montreal, which should have been Mtl.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from the Gwynn Family.

A portion of the proceeds generated by the Tony Gwynn Collection will be donated to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation. The TAG Foundation is a non-profit, 5013(c) charity dedicated to creating and supporting programs that enhance opportunities for youth to become healthy, educated, and productive citizens. The TAG Foundation was organized in San Diego in 1995 by Tony’s wife, Alicia. For more information, visit www.tagwynn2.org.
