Beautiful Portrait of Joe DiMaggio in his prime before the war. Snapped during the last week of the 1942 season, DiMaggio was fresh off his second AL MVP Award season and facing an unknown future as World War II went into full swing. DiMaggio would have a tough time during the 1942 season, having to face accusations of dodging the draft, being criticized by fans for his holding out for more money, and dealing with a crumbling marriage at home. All this had an adverse effect on his hitting, and he finished a disappointing 52 points below the .357 he hit in ’41. Knowing what DiMaggio was dealing with during the 1942 season enables us to understand the expression on his face in this pensive portrait. The photo show good toning from age along with some surface abrasions. None of these effects the beauty and sharpness of the portrait. The reverse of the photo shows toning throughout along with the Acme Newspictures stamping and “Joe DiMaggio” and date of “9/24/42” handwritten in pencil. The photograph measures 7 x 9” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
