This 1938 original Type I photograph of Joe DiMaggio might be familiar to card collectors. That’s because it’s the same image used to produce his 1939-46 Salutation Exhibits card. The Yankee Clipper was in his third season when this statuesque shot was taken. Sporting the famous home pinstripes, DiMaggio is pictured in a follow-through pose with bat on shoulder as the Yankee faithful file into their seats before a game. A pair of pinholes (one at each upper corner) is really the only blemish to this essentially flawless photo. The reverse has a brief caption attached. These trading card prototype photos are heavily sought after in the market, especially when it comes to a legend the likes of Joltin’ Joe.
