The San Diego Chargers football team was born in 1959 as a charter member of the then-American Football League. The team played its first season in 1960 season in Los Angeles and the next year moved to San Diego, where they played from 1961 until 2016. The Chargers announced earlier this year a return to Los Angeles starting with the 2017 season. In all, the team has won one AFL championship (1963) and one AFC title (1994) and has made 17 playoff appearances. This lot features the San Diego Chargers “Charger of the Year” trophy that spans the 1969 to 1975 campaigns.

The 32-inch trophy, which weighs 24 pounds, features a bronzed, 23-inch male sculpture atop a three-tiered wooden base that includes multiple engraved plaques, the first of which reads: “CHARGER OF THE YEAR.” The middle section sports an enameled white and blue Chargers emblem and 10 gold plaques, seven of which are engraved with the following recipients’ names per season: Steve Delong 1969; Gary Garrison 1970; John Hadl 1971; Cid Edwards 1972; Russ Washington 1973; Don Woods 1974; and Pat Curran 1975. The base level includes a single engraved plaque that reads: “Presented By The San Diego Union Tribune & Evening Tribune.”
