Famed photographer Jeffrey Mayer shot many rockstars and groups in his career that began in the 1960s – but it was Doors front man Jim Morrison who he says stands out for the indescribable “aura” he displayed while on stage. The qualities that impressed Mayer are clearly visible in this evocative Type 1 concert shot. The show was the August 23, 1968, show at the Singer Bowl in Flushing, Queens, New York. Morrison is dressed in his trademark leather pants and jacket and was captured intoning his vocals into the mic as Robby Krieger lays down a guitar interlude behind him. Mayer does a wonderful job with the lighting as the shine off Morrison’s leather outfit contrasts with the dark background and Krieger’s white suit. Very few Type 1 photos exist of Morrison and this one from Mayer’s 1968 concert series are among the finest. The image shows some light wear and surface scuffs but displays beautifully. The reverse has a cancelled copyright stamps and no writing. The photograph measures 8” x 10” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
