From 1890 to 1911, Cy Young ruled the sport of baseball, compiling 511 wins over 7,356 innings pitched. Five times he led his league in wins, won the coveted pitching Triple Crown in 1901 and was an integral member of the team that won the very first World Series in 1903. The career of Cy Young is intertwined with the early history and popularization of the National Pastime. A legend in his own time, there are countless photographs of the great pitcher – though the majority are studio portraits. This one is different; it depicts Cy Young in the environment where he made history – the ballpark. The photographer has captured the great righthander sitting on the edge of the dugout looking out onto the field. Several teammates are sitting on the bench in the background. The detail captured is amazing, from Cy Young’s eyes to the laces on his Boston jersey. The photo measures 5” x 7 1/2” and has been trimmed. The left edge shows a rough edge than the right and the top and bottom show uneven edges. There are some surface abrasions but nothing overtly distracting from the image itself. A rare glimpse at one of the game’s greatest stars at rest in a dugout setting. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
