On January 28th, 1981, on the opening night of Quebec's new Coliseum, the Jean-Lesage Cup was unveiled to commemorate one of the most renowned personalities in the history of the province of Quebec.

This trophy is awarded every year to the Nordiques' player who is the most outstanding representative of his profession. The established criteria requires that the winner be "...the ideal of every hockey fan and will reflect, as the honorable Jean-Lesage did in his political life, the image of a courageous human being, strong in adversity, inspiring respect and deserving the admiration of a nation."

This cup stands 34" tall and is adorned with the likeness of its namesake on the front. Engraved placards on the base show the names of four past recipients; Robbie Ftorek 1980-81, Peter Stastny 1981-82, Michel Goulet 1982-83 and Michel Goulet 1983-84. The cup comes housed in a custom felt lined box.
