While many a legend in New York Yankees history has been celebrated with a day in his honor, Joe DiMaggio transcends those revered pinstripers. In keeping with the time-honored tradition of reserving an afternoon for well wishings and gift giving at the club's hallowed Bronx venue, DiMaggio, too, was applauded. But in Joltin' Joe's case, he was still a full two seasons from hanging up his cleats. The offered framed composition includes a ticket stub to the Yankees October 1, 1949 contest against the Boston Red Sox as well as a program for the game with the interior scored lineup detached for display. Before a season-high 69,551 onlookers that day, DiMaggio was showered with gifts of all sorts—including a Cadillac for himself and a Dodge for his mother. Of utmost importance that day was the diamond battle, as the Red Sox entered play with a magic number of 1. Appropriately, DiMaggio went 2-for-4 with a double and a run as the Yanks erased a 4-0 deficit in besting their rivals. The very next day, New York prevailed again, this time by a 5-3 count, to clinch the A.L. flag on the final day of the regular season. Frame measures 26” by 21”.
