For the second year in a row, the Cardinals finished second in the NL despite Stan Musial’s MVP season in which he hit .376, 39 homers and 131 RBI. This was Stan’s third MVP Award, the first time any player achieved that accomplishment. Both of these 1948 Spalding Official National League balls have been signed by 21 Cardinals including Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter and Red Schoendienst, plus Marty Marion, Whitey Kurowski, Red Schoendienst, Howie Pollet, Murry Dickson, Jim Hearn, Ted Wilks, Jerry Staley, Nippy Jones, Bill Baker, Ron Northey, Erv Dusak, Harry Brecheen, George Munger, Al Brazle, Don Lang, Ken Johnson, Babe Young, and manager Eddie Dyer. The date “1947” has been hand written on one of the balls, though the player combination proved both to be from the ’48 squad.
