At the age of 39, Ted Williams managed to hit .388 in 1957, finishing 23 points higher than a young Mickey Mantle and good enough to earn him his fifth career batting title. Topps chose to honor that achievement, and for the second year in a row they placed Williams at the front of its set. As with most #1 cards, Ted’s 1958 Topps issue is an extreme condition rarity. Among the more than 1,600 examples graded by PSA to date, the offered card is one of only 9 examples to warrant their MINT 9 rating with none graded higher.
