This uniform piece features the Iron Horse's iconic number 4 that he wore from 1923 to 1939, as well as the famed pinstripes. Because Gehrig was the cleanup hitter in the number 4 spot in the lineup, he was given the number 4. Babe Ruth, the man who completed the legendary Yankee duo, wore number 3 because he batted third in the lineup. Gehrig’s number 4 was the first number ever retired by a Major League Baseball franchise. Gehrig is universally recognized as one of the greatest hitters of all time for his almost unmatched hitting skills. He is highly ranked in many different all-time offensive categories, including on-base plus slugging percentage, career runs batted in total, and career batting average. During his time in pinstripes, Gehrig was one half of one of the mightiest duos in professional sports history. As part of the famed “Murderers' Row” in 1927, Gehrig and Ruth both put together MVP-caliber seasons. Gehrig batted .373 with 173 runs batted in and led the league in doubles with 52, while Ruth batted .356, drove in 165 runs and hit a then single-season record of 60 home runs. Gehrig was a six-time World Series champion, two-time American League Most Valuable Player, Triple Crown winner, and three-time AL home run leader, among countless other accomplishments.
