The lovable boxer Rocky Balboa is known throughout the planet as the come-from-behind, never-give-up every man character created and portrayed by film legend Sylvester Stallone. When the movie script for the third installment of the “Rocky” series was finished, a scene in the film called for a large crowd to attend a dedication ceremony at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to honor the heavyweight boxing champ. After the speeches and formalities, a gargantuan bronze statue of “The Italian Stallion” standing close to 9-foot tall would be revealed to the adoring throng of fans. That beautifully sculpted work of art was done by noted Colorado-based sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg. In 2010, to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the original commissioning of the statue, MGM and Schomberg created two miniatures of the original, a 12-inch model and a 20-inch model.
This lot features eight of the 12-inch tall miniatures replicating the original Rocky Balboa statue that Schomberg created for “Rocky III” and is shown in subsequent installments of the "Rocky" movies. Each of the smaller resin-filled versions, which weigh just over one pound apiece, now show some form of patina throughout the sculpture.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
