In 1929 Lucky Strike cigarettes chose to feature the winners of Most Valuable Player Award from the National and American Leagues. Mickey Cochrane, the AL’s MVP was depicted in a catcher’s pose while Jim Bottomley of the NL was shown in this lively batting follow through. Bottomley, known as “Sunny Jim” due to his cheerful demeanor, batted .325 and led the league in homers, triples and RBI. Bottomley would go on to hit .310 in his 16-year career that included a World Championship in 1934 and a plaque in Cooperstown. This over-sized die-cut counter display measures approximately 36” tall and shows the expected edge wear, most noticeably along the bottom. The piece remains bright and has been professionally framed with UV glass and a dark matte to bring out its magnificent color.
