On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig delivered one of the most memorable speeches in the history of sports when he shared the news about his medical diagnosis, given less than two years to live. Gehrig included “Today I consider myself the luckiest man of the face of the earth” showing his positivity going into the situation. Offered in this lot is an iconic Type II photograph of Gehrig shaking hands with Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia on the day of Gehrig’s ‘Luckiest Man’ speech. The photograph remains in near mint to mint condition and was produced circa 1958-62. A United Press International Photo stamp is present on the rear side of the photo, denoting its manufacturer. Encapsulated in a PSA jumbo holder for great display and protection.
