On June 29, 1996, the town of Oakville, Alabama recognized Jesse Owens, its most famous citizen, by dedicating a park in his honor. The town where Owens was born and lived for his first nine years, presented the Owens family with this plaque to commemorate the event. The 5" x 7" wood plaque has an embossed golden medallion depicting Jesse Owens at the starting line surrounded by “JESSE OWENS MARATHON RUN LAWRENCE COUNTY ALABAMA.” An engraved plaque below reads “IN COMMEMORATION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL PARK OAKVILLE, ARKANSAS JUNE 29, 1996.” The plaque is mounted on a white marble base and measures 5" x 2½" x 9" overall. The piece shows very light wear. An attractive piece showing Owens’ hometown’s recognition of their favorite son.
Includes LOA signed by each of Jesse Owens' three daughters.
