By the 1960s Jesse Owens had evolved from a well-respected athlete to a much sought after motivational speaker. This medal, 50mm in diameter and 58 grams, was given to the great Olympian presumably for one such speaking engagement. The front of the medal has Liberty with her torch illuminating a shield upon which “Olympic Champion Del-Craft Co. 1961” is engraved. The back has “Jesse Owens engraved into a shield and wreath motif. The medal shows medium wear with toning and several scuffs and abrasions to its surface. Based on its size, weight and appearance, it appears to be made of gold-plated bronze.
