In the years after World War II, Jesse Owens was a celebrated guest at each Summer Olympics. As an inspirational figure for both his work on and off the athletic field, Owens served as an ambassador of good will, and this Participation Medal was presented to him for his service at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

The medal cast in bronze is designed by Emilio Greco and minted by Bertoni of Milan. Obverse shows nude female torchbearer in foreground with the Olympic rings in background. Reverse shows flight of eagles soaring over Rome stadium, with "GIOCHI DELLA XVII OLYMPIADE ROMA MCMLX" inscribed around the rim. 55mm diameter; 4-5mm thick; 80 grams. Light wear.

LOA signed by each of Jesse Owens' three daughters.
