In 1979, while accompanying her father to the first of the legendary gatherings of Negro League ball players held in Ashland, Kentucky, our consignor, the daughter of the outstanding Negro League star and recent Hall of Fame inductee Turkey Stearns, obtained especially for her father the signatures of several of his close friends. These ball players who had toiled for years without great fanfare, have only recently gained proper recognition for their contributions to our National Pastime. On this ASA official softball we find bold signatures of Hall of Famers Ray Dandridge, Buck Leonard, Leon Day, Judy Johnson, and Monte Irvin as well as stars Quincy Trouppe, Ted Page, Gene Benson and Clint Thomas. Turkey Stearns, who passed away in 1979, just a few short weeks after this gathering, also signed the ball on its sweet spot in huge lettering measuring over four inches in length. Signatures average 8/10 with the Stearns being a strong 9. LOA from Turkey Stearns’ daughter. Additional LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA.
Estimate: $5,000-8,000
