In 1910, the Tuxedo tobacco brand rolled out a series of advertisements featuring several of the greatest ballplayers of the era. Of the these, the pieces featuring Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants are the most sought after. At this point in his career, Matty had won the pitching Triple Crown twice, led the National League in wins four times and strikeouts five times. He pitched the Giants to a World Championship in 1905 and won thirty or more games four times. Matty’s portrait was featured in several different formats, including a horizontal trolly sign and print advertisements for newspapers and magazines. However, this format, a 14-by-19-inch and 4 inches deep display box, it the largest and arguably the most sought after. Mathewson’ colorful portrait and the elegant Tuxedo script logo are set against a bright golden yellow background making a very impactful display. The display shows some color fading from age along with the edge wear and some surface chipping one would expect to find on a large format turn of the century advertising display box. One of the hobby’s most sought after advertising pieces and inarguably one of its most attractive.
