The late Don Drysdale, the intimidating Hall of Fame pitcher for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, was honored by the Dodgers with “Don Drysdale Day” on September 28, 1969, following his retirement announcement six weeks earlier on August 11. During the course of the festivities that day at Dodger Stadium, plenty of memorable gifts were bestowed upon the man who collected 209 wins and struck out 2,486 batters for the Blue Crew during his major league career. This lot includes six different laminated wood plaques featuring magazine covers – five World Series programs in which Drysdale participated and one Los Angeles Dodgers program cover that featured Big D on it – that were awarded to Drysdale that day from six members of the Dodgers organization.
The first is from the 1956 World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees and includes a special gold plaque at the bottom from teammate Sal Maglie. The second is from the 1959 World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and Chicago White Sox and includes a special gold plaque at the bottom from teammate Maury Wills. The third is from the 1963 World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and New York Yankees and includes a special gold plaque at the bottom from manager Walt Alston. The fourth is from the 1965 World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and Minnesota Twins and includes a special gold plaque at the bottom from teammate Sandy Koufax. The fifth showcases the 1966 World Series between the L.A. Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles and includes a special gold plaque at the bottom from teammate Jim Gilliam, while the sixth and final laminated wood plaque features a classic illustration of Drysdale in full windup on the cover of L.A. Dodgers’ 1968 Official Dodger Scorecard. The latter cover comes complete with a gold plaque from teammate and catcher, Tom Haller. Each wood plaque measures 11.5” wide by 14” tall.
