This is the 2nd Place Silver medal awarded to Christian Laettner in the 1989 Tournament of the Americas, a basketball championship held in Mexico City from June 8 to June 18, 1989. The tournament, later known as the FIBA Americas Championship and the FIBA AmeriCup, aimed to determine the five berths allocated to the Americas for the 1990 FIBA World Championship in Argentina. Puerto Rico emerged as the winner, defeating the United States in the finals.
The front of the medal features the inscription "Comision Nacional Del Deporte" and depicts the Mesoamerican ballgame of ulama. On the reverse side, it bears the inscription "1es. Torneo De Las Americas De Basquetbol Varonil" Del 8 al 1818 de Junio de 1989 Mexico, D.F. The medal has a diameter of 2.75", weighs 5.3 ounces, and hangs on a red, white, and green ribbon. A letter of provenance from Christian Laettner accompanies the medal.
